Wellness Care

Our dedicated veterinarian, Dr. Jodie Poller, believes that comprehensive, proactive health care is the best way to approach veterinary care. Diagnosing disease or medical issues early, usually means a better prognosis, as treatment is more likely to be effective. Early detection can also seriously reduce the cost of medical treatment. In fact, performing routine wellness exams and utilizing comprehensive wellness care can prevent many diseases and health conditions from occurring in the first place. Monitoring a pet's health from an early age with regular exams, can improve both quality of life and longevity. It is our goal at First Avenue Veterinary Hospital to provide our animal patients with the best veterinary care available, so that you can rely on us to care for them throughout their lives.

Vaccine Titer Options

Here at First Avenue Veterinary Hospital we firmly believe in the use of Vaccinations as preventative measures to protect the health and well-being of your pet. In cases of older patients entering geriatric years, while vaccinations are certainly an option, it may also be beneficial to take a blood sample to see if a vaccination is needed. Titers measure the amount of antibodies present in the blood sample taken and give us an idea of how strong your pet’s immunity is against a specific virus. From there we can determine what is needed to continue protecting your animal.

Dental Care

Our practice is equipped with a digital dental x-ray machine, which helps us to detect any existing problems with your pets oral health. With pets, many dental health issues may be difficult or impossible to see when simply brushing their teeth. The dental x-ray allows us to see below the surface and make sure that any potential or existing problems are handled right away.

As much as we'd like to prevent your pet from ever suffering an illness, we know that even with excellent wellness care, illnesses and injuries can happen. Early diagnosis of the onset of disease can vastly improve the chance of recovery, and reduce the medical costs of treatment. Regular exams can help us monitor your pet's health effectively, and detect early signs of disease. Should your pet incur an injury, or seem out of sorts, the earlier you bring them in for diagnosis, the sooner they can be treated, preventing suffering and allowing the condition to worsen.

Digital Radiographs available at our hospital are quick and efficient in obtaining information that can lead to a diagnosis. Previous radiological technology was time consuming and at times images taken were difficult to assess due to poor quality or inaccuracies in exposure of the film. We possess the latest in digital radiography technology that minimizes the time it takes to obtain an image and gives us an instant read on image content and quality so we can efficiently and accurately see what is happening inside your pet. This technology also allows for quick and easy record sharing should you desire a second opinion or simply see for yourself what we are seeing.

General & Specialized Surgical Care

First Avenue Veterinary Hospital employs state-of-the-art equipment in our surgical facility, allowing Dr. Jodie Poller to perform surgical procedures using the most advanced techniques available. In cases that require a highly-specialized procedure, we work with a board-certified surgeon to perform the surgery. Our facility is also designed to allow our caring staff to monitor patients before, during, and after surgery, so that their comfort and safety is never in jeopardy. Our staff will also make certain you're kept informed of your pet's recovery progress. Releasing your beloved family pet to your veterinarian for a surgical procedure is not an easy decision. Your concerns are understandable, and we are here to offer you whatever information or reassurance we can provide. We want nothing more than to keep your pet in optimal health, and to see them reunited with you, healthy and fully recovered.

Spay And Neuter

The choice to spay or neuter your pet may be the most valuable choice you can make to positively impact quality of life for many animals as well as life expectancy of your pet. Every year millions of dogs and cats are euthanized due to lack of space and resources available at animal shelters across the country. The solution is simple. These numbers can significantly drop by spaying or neutering your pet. By doing this you can be a part of the solution to significantly decrease the number of homeless animals and prevent needless suffering. Studies have also shown that spaying or neutering increases life expectancy by a large margin; increased life expectancy by nearly 20% has been observed in neutered and spayed cats and dogs. By spaying or neutering your pet you decrease the risk of infections as well as cancers of the urine and reproductive systems.
